- Natural blue egg colour 💙
- General health and condition
- Fertility and breeding potential
- Attractive dark plumage
- Blue-green feather iridescence
- Active and alert characteristics
These eggs are not advertised as coming from an established elite, exhibition or show-quality line. Chicks may vary in appearance, body type, temperament and future laying ability.
🎨 Egg Colour
The hens produce naturally blue-shelled eggs, ranging from pale blue to light and medium blue-grey shades.
- Egg colour can vary between individual hens.
- Shell intensity may change during the laying cycle.
- Lighting and photography can affect how blue the eggs appear.
- Blue shell colour is a natural genetic characteristic.
- Future daughters may lay different shades of blue.
- Exact colour intensity cannot be guaranteed for every pullet.
🥚 No matter the shell colour, egg flavour depends mainly on freshness, nutrition and how the eggs are prepared—not on the colour of the shell.
🐔 Parent-Stock Appearance

- Predominantly black plumage 🖤
- Strong blue, green and turquoise iridescence ✨

- Fibre and roughage
- Selected seeds
- Feedtek layer supplement
- Camelus layer supplement
- Fresh seasonal greens
- Clean drinking water
The complete recipe and ingredient ratios are part of our private breeding programme and remain exclusive to Garden Route Trail Hatch House.
Our nutrition programme is designed to support the condition of the parent birds and the production of good-quality hatching eggs. However, nutrition cannot guarantee that every egg will be fertile or hatch.
🏡 Housing and Breeding Management
Our breeding stock is raised in the Garden Route 🌿 in clean, secure and carefully managed housing.
Due to high predator pressure in our area, the birds are safely housed in protected enclosures rather than being allowed to free-range unsupervised. This allows us to maintain secure breeding groups, controlled nutrition and improved flock protection.
Our focus is on quality, responsible husbandry and bird wellbeing rather than high-volume production.
🔥 Hatching and Incubation Guide
These eggs are sold specifically for incubation.
Before Setting
- Set the eggs as soon as practical after receiving them.
- Allow transported eggs to settle before incubation.
- Store pointed end down in a cool, stable place.
- Do not refrigerate fertile hatching eggs.
- Do not wash the eggs.
- Ensure the incubator is clean and correctly calibrated.
Days 1–17
For a fan-assisted incubator:
- Temperature: approximately 37.5–37.7°C
- Humidity: approximately 45–55%
- Turn eggs regularly or use an automatic turner
Our personal preference is to avoid unnecessary handling and leave the eggs undisturbed during the first part of incubation.
Lockdown on Day 18
On approximately Day 18:
- Remove the eggs briefly from the incubator.
- Remove the turning tray.
- Candle each egg carefully.
- Remove eggs that are clearly undeveloped or have stopped developing.
- Keep uncertain eggs rather than discarding them too early.
- Place the remaining eggs on their sides.
- Stop turning.
- Add water and raise humidity to approximately 65–70%.
- Close the incubator and avoid unnecessary opening.
A single flat layer of paper towel may be placed on a suitable lockdown floor to provide traction for newly hatched chicks. It must not cover vents, fans, sensors, heating elements or water channels.
Chicken eggs normally hatch around Day 21, although some may hatch earlier or later.
During Hatching
- Keep the incubator closed as much as possible.
- Opening the incubator repeatedly can reduce humidity.
- Low humidity during hatching can dry the membrane around chicks.
- Leave chicks inside until they are dry and fluffy.
- Where possible, wait until most chicks have hatched before moving them to the brooder.
We do not recommend routinely opening unhatched eggs or assisting chicks from the shell.
Only consider very cautious assistance if an egg has already partially zipped and the membrane has clearly dried around the chick. Never pull a chick when active blood vessels or an unabsorbed yolk are visible.
