Description

Beautiful Blue, Turquoise, Sage & Green Eggs from Cream Legbar-Type Rooster × Blue/Green Colour-Layer Hens 🐣

🐣 Breed Overview

  • These fertile eggs are produced from a carefully selected breeding flock consisting of blue, grey, laced and mixed colour-layer hens, running with a Cream Legbar-type rooster carrying coloured-egg genetics 💙
  • This is an intentionally crossbred colour-egg project, not a purebred Cream Legbar line
  • Selected from healthy, productive hens laying naturally coloured eggs
  • The breeding programme focuses on beautiful egg colour, attractive plumage, hardiness, fertility and temperament
  • The flock includes hens displaying beautiful blue, slate-grey, laced, dark and gold/copper-influenced feather colouring
  • Hardy and adaptable birds suitable for backyard flocks, homesteads and small farms

🎨 Egg Colour

  • Our current hens produce beautiful shades of blue-green, turquoise, sage green, mint green and olive-toned green 🥚💙💚
  • The actual eggs pictured are an excellent example of the natural colour variation within the breeding flock
  • Coloured-shell genetics are being combined through our Cream Legbar-type rooster × selected colour-layer hens
  • Future pullets may produce different shades depending on the combination of shell-colour genes inherited from both parents
  • Egg colour cannot be guaranteed for individual offspring, particularly because this is a crossbred breeding project
  • Egg shell colour does not affect taste or nutritional quality; nutrition, health and freshness remain the important factors 👍

🧬 Appearance & Colour Characteristics

  • Chicks from this breeding group can show considerable variation because they are crossbred rather than a fixed pure breed
  • Potential feather colours and patterns include blue, slate-grey, silver-grey, black, gold/copper, barred, laced and mixed combinations
  • Some offspring may inherit characteristics associated with the Cream Legbar side of the breeding
  • Other chicks may more strongly resemble their colour-layer mothers
  • Leg colour may also vary between offspring
  • Crests, feather patterns, body colour and other physical characteristics cannot be guaranteed
  • Every hatch has the potential to produce its own interesting combination of characteristics

😊 Temperament

  • The breeding flock consists of active, alert and manageable birds 🐔
  • Birds are accustomed to a well-managed small-flock environment
  • Crossbred offspring may inherit a mixture of characteristics from both sides of their parentage
  • Individual temperament will naturally vary between birds

🥚 Egg Production

  • Bred with the aim of producing practical laying birds combined with beautiful coloured eggs
  • Future pullets have the potential to contribute blue, turquoise, green and related shades to a colourful egg basket 💙💚
  • Exact laying rate and mature egg colour will depend on the individual bird, inherited genetics, age, season, nutrition and management
  • Because these are crosses, we do not guarantee a particular annual egg number or exact shell colour

🌿 Why They’re Perfect Backyard Chickens

  • Beautiful coloured-egg genetics 💎
  • Potential for an exceptionally varied egg basket
  • Attractive and unusual feather colours
  • Every hatch can produce something slightly different
  • Combines the appeal of the Cream Legbar-type sire with selected blue/green colour-layer hens
  • Suitable for poultry enthusiasts wanting to develop their own colourful laying flock
  • Excellent choice for breeders interested in continuing a blue and green egg breeding project
  • Attractive combination of ornamental appeal and practical egg production

💡 Fun Facts

  • The blue egg gene causes blue pigment to be incorporated into the shell as it forms 💙
  • Green eggs result when brown pigment is deposited over a genetically blue-based shell
  • Different combinations of genetics can produce shades ranging from pale blue and turquoise through mint, sage and deeper green
  • A hen’s mature egg colour generally remains within her own characteristic colour range, although shade intensity can change during the laying cycle
  • Crossbreeding coloured-egg lines can produce fascinating variation in both plumage and shell colour
  • The appearance of the egg a chick hatches from does not guarantee the exact colour that a female chick will eventually lay

🔥 Hatching & Incubation Guide

  • Main purpose: These eggs are sold for incubation to hatch your own chicks 🐣
  • For best results, set fresh eggs as soon as practical, ideally within approximately 7 days
  • Typical forced-air chicken incubation settings:
    • Temperature: 37.5°C
    • Humidity: approximately 45–55% during Days 1–18
    • Humidity: approximately 65–70% during lockdown
  • Turn eggs regularly or use an automatic egg turner
  • Stop turning on approximately Day 18
  • Chicken eggs normally hatch around Day 21
  • Candle around Day 7 and Day 14 🔦
  • Store hatching eggs pointed end down in a cool location before setting
  • Do not refrigerate fertile hatching eggs intended for incubation
  • Allow transported eggs time to settle before placing them into the incubator
  • Important: Fertility and hatch rates cannot be guaranteed because results are affected by transport, storage time, handling, incubator accuracy, temperature, humidity and incubation technique

🌿 Breeding, Housing & Nutrition

  • Our breeding stock is raised in the beautiful Garden Route environment 🌿, with spacious, clean and carefully managed housing designed around bird health, comfort and biosecurity
  • Due to the high predator pressure in our area, our premium breeding birds are safely housed rather than free-ranged 🛡️
  • This allows us to protect the birds while maintaining controlled feeding and breeding groups
  • Birds receive a carefully balanced, high-quality base feed
  • Their feeding programme is supplemented with canola and sunflower oil
  • The flock receives regular fresh greens 🥬
  • Protein-rich fly larvae 🐛 are provided as an additional natural protein source
  • Additional supplementation includes Camelus Avi Layer & Breeder
  • Our nutrition programme is designed to support the overall condition of our breeding birds and the production of good-quality hatching eggs
  • Our focus is on quality rather than mass production, with careful attention given to the condition and wellbeing of the breeding flock

❤️ Our Philosophy

  • At Garden Route Trail Hatch House, our chickens are more than production animals — they are part of our family 🐔❤️
  • We believe in raising our birds with care, respect and close attention to their wellbeing
  • We do not operate an intensive, high-output breeding system
  • Instead, we have created a safe, carefully managed environment where our unusual and beautiful birds can thrive while remaining protected from predators
  • Our breeding programme focuses on healthy birds, interesting genetics and beautiful naturally coloured eggs 🌿
  • No vaccinations are administered
  • No routine medications or antibiotic treatments are used
  • No added hormones are used 🚫
  • Our goal is to maintain healthy, well-managed breeding stock capable of producing strong fertile eggs
  • We believe excellent husbandry, nutrition and responsible breeding are fundamental to the quality of the birds and eggs we produce ✅

🧬 Breeder Line & Origin

  • Our breeding stock has been sourced from reputable poultry breeders across South Africa 🇿🇦
  • We continue selecting birds for desirable characteristics including egg colour, health, fertility, temperament and appearance
  • Because this particular breeding group is a colour-layer cross, offspring should not be represented as pure Cream Legbars
  • The aim is instead to develop attractive, healthy birds with diverse plumage and desirable blue/green coloured-egg genetics 🥚💙💚
  • Customers interested in the background of the breeding stock are welcome to research the original breeder lines
  • Our long-term goal is to continue refining our colour-layer flock while maintaining genetic diversity and strong, healthy breeding birds.
