- Lucerne
- Fibre and roughage
- Selected seeds
- Feedtek layer supplement
- Camelus layer supplement
- Fresh seasonal greens
- Clean drinking water
The complete recipe and ingredient ratios are part of our private breeding programme and remain exclusive to Garden Route Trail Hatch House.
Our nutrition programme is designed to support parent-stock condition and the production of good-quality hatching eggs. However, nutrition cannot guarantee that every egg will be fertile or hatch.
🏡 Housing and Breeding Management
Our breeding stock is raised in the Garden Route 🌿 in clean, secure and carefully managed housing.
Due to high predator pressure in our area, the birds are safely housed in protected enclosures rather than being allowed to free-range unsupervised. This helps us maintain secure breeding groups, controlled nutrition and improved flock protection.
Our focus is on responsible husbandry, bird wellbeing and carefully managed breeding rather than high-volume production.
🔥 Hatching and Incubation Guide
These eggs are sold specifically for incubation.
Before Setting
- Unpack transported eggs carefully and allow them to settle before incubation.
- Set the eggs as soon as practical after receiving them.
- Store pointed end down in a cool, stable place.
- Do not refrigerate fertile hatching eggs.
- Do not wash the eggs.
- Ensure the incubator is clean and correctly calibrated.
Temperature Accuracy
For a fan-assisted incubator, aim for an actual measured temperature of approximately 37.5°C.
Check the temperature at egg level using reliable independent incubator thermometers before setting your eggs.
The incubator display may differ from the actual temperature. A display reading of 37.7–37.8°C may be appropriate for a particular machine only if independent measurements confirm that its actual temperature is approximately 37.5°C.
Always test a new incubator before use.
Days 1–17 — Before Day 18 Lockdown
Our personal recommendation is dry incubation during the initial incubation period, until lockdown on Day 18, aiming for humidity around 40–50%.
Dry incubation means avoiding added water when the incubator naturally maintains this humidity range. It does not mean allowing humidity to fall unchecked. Add water if necessary to maintain suitable conditions.
- Maintain an actual, independently checked temperature of approximately 37.5°C in a fan-assisted incubator.
- Aim for humidity around 40–50% before lockdown.
- Monitor humidity and egg moisture loss, adjusting for your incubator and local conditions.
- Turn eggs regularly or use an automatic turner.
- Maintain adequate ventilation.
This is our preferred method rather than a fixed rule for every incubator. Follow your incubator manufacturer’s guidance and adjust humidity according to egg moisture loss.
Our personal preference is to avoid unnecessary handling during the first part of incubation.
Lockdown on Day 18
On approximately Day 18:
- Stop turning and remove the turning tray.
- Candle each egg carefully while preparing for lockdown.
- Remove eggs that are clearly undeveloped or have stopped developing.
- Keep uncertain eggs rather than discarding them prematurely.
- Place the remaining eggs on their sides.
- Add water and raise humidity to approximately 65–70%, following your incubator’s instructions.
- Keep ventilation openings clear.
- Close the incubator and avoid unnecessary opening.
A single flat layer of paper towel may be placed on a suitable lockdown floor to provide traction for newly hatched chicks. It must not cover vents, fans, sensors, heating elements or water channels.
Chicken eggs normally hatch around Day 21, although some may hatch earlier or later.
During Hatching
- Keep the incubator closed as much as possible.
- Repeated opening can reduce humidity.
- Leave chicks inside until they are dry and fluffy.
- Move dry chicks to a prepared, warm brooder.
- Avoid routinely opening unhatched eggs or assisting chicks from the shell.
A pause after pipping does not automatically mean a chick needs help. Seek experienced advice before attempting assistance. Never pull a chick when active blood vessels or an unabsorbed yolk are visible.
