Description

Polkie Fertile Eggs – Polish Bantam × Silkie Ornamental Cross

🎭 Beautiful Crested Hybrids – Fluffy Genetics, Unique Colours & Plenty of Personality 🐣

🐣 Cross Overview

  • These fertile eggs are produced by black Silkie hens crossed with our white and black Polish Bantam roosters
  • The resulting chicks are commonly and affectionately called “Polkies”
  • Polkies are ornamental hybrid chickens combining traits from two distinctive breeds
  • Ideal for backyard flocks, ornamental collections and poultry enthusiasts looking for something unusual
  • Please note: Polkies are a crossbreed and not a standardised or recognised pure breed

🎨 Egg Colour

  • The fertile eggs are laid by our black Silkie hens
  • Shell colours may range from cream to lightly tinted
  • The shell colour of a hatching egg does not determine the exact colour or appearance of the chick
  • No matter the shell colour, all chicken eggs taste essentially the same 👍

🧬 Parent Combination

  • Roosters: White and black Polish Bantams
  • Hens: Black Silkies
  • This pairing combines the Polish Bantam’s dramatic crest with the Silkie’s dark skin, feathered legs and gentle nature
  • Because this is a hybrid pairing, the chicks may inherit different combinations of traits from either parent

🎭 Expected Chick Appearance

Polkie chicks may display a fascinating variety of features, including:

  • Crested or partially crested heads
  • Black, charcoal, grey, white or mixed-colour plumage
  • Possible white markings, colour leakage or contrasting patches
  • Dark, slate or mixed skin pigmentation
  • Feathered or partially feathered legs and feet
  • Four or five toes, depending on which traits each chick inherits
  • Small combs with variable shapes
  • Compact bantam-type bodies

Every chick may look different, even when hatched from eggs produced by the same breeding group.

🪶 Important Feathering Information

  • Silkie feathering is generally a recessive genetic trait
  • Most first-generation Polkie chicks are therefore expected to have normal, smooth feathers while carrying the Silkie-feather gene
  • Fully Silkie-feathered chicks should not be guaranteed from this first-generation cross
  • Breeding suitable first-generation offspring together, or breeding them back to a Silkie, may produce some Silkie-feathered chicks in future generations
  • Genetics can vary, and no particular feather type, crest size, colour, toe count or skin colour can be guaranteed

😊 Temperament

  • Both Polish Bantams and Silkies are generally known for gentle, entertaining personalities
  • Polkies may be friendly, curious and easy to manage
  • Their crests can sometimes restrict their vision, making them more easily startled
  • Best kept in secure, predator-protected housing 🛡️
  • Care should be taken to prevent larger or more dominant chickens from pecking their crests

🥚 Egg Production

  • Polkie pullets are expected to lay small cream to lightly tinted eggs
  • Egg production may vary considerably between individual birds
  • They are best regarded as ornamental or hobby chickens rather than high-production layers
  • The exact age at first lay, egg size, shell shade and annual production cannot be guaranteed in a hybrid cross

🌿 Why They’re Perfect Backyard Chickens

  • Exceptionally unusual and decorative appearance 💎
  • Ideal for ornamental and hobby flocks
  • Compact size makes them suitable for smaller setups
  • Potential for beautiful crests, feathered feet and dark pigmentation
  • Each hatch can produce a unique variety of chicks
  • Wonderful project birds for breeders interested in developing their own Polkie line

💡 Fun Facts

  • The name “Polkie” is an informal combination of Polish and Silkie
  • There is no fixed Polkie breed standard, so appearance can vary widely
  • Polish chickens are famous for their dramatic “top hat” crests 🎩
  • Silkies are known for their dark skin, five toes, feathered feet and soft plumage
  • First-generation Polkies can carry the recessive Silkie-feather gene even when they have normal feathers

⭐ Why You’ll Love Them

  • Beautiful and unpredictable ornamental chicks
  • A combination of two popular and distinctive chicken breeds
  • Perfect for creating a colourful, character-filled backyard flock
  • Excellent conversation birds
  • Potential foundation stock for a future crested, feather-footed Polkie breeding project

🔥 Hatching & Incubation Guide

  • Main purpose: These eggs are sold for incubation to hatch your own Polkie chicks 🐣
  • Best results are generally achieved when eggs are incubated within 7 days of laying
  • Recommended incubation settings:
    • Temperature: 37.5°C
    • Humidity: 45–55% during Days 1–18
    • Humidity: 65–70% during the final three days
  • Turn eggs at least 3–5 times daily if your incubator does not turn them automatically
  • Stop turning on Day 18
  • Expected hatch time: approximately 21 days ⏳
  • Candle eggs around Day 7 and Day 14 🔦
  • Allow transported eggs to rest with the pointed end facing downward before setting them
  • Important: Fertility and hatch rates cannot be guaranteed after collection or courier dispatch because incubation, temperature changes, transport handling and equipment accuracy are outside our control

❤️ Our Philosophy

  • At Garden Route Trail Hatch House, our chickens are more than just livestock – they are part of our family 🐔
  • We believe in raising birds with care, respect and close attention to their wellbeing
  • We do not support intensive or caged breeding systems where birds are treated purely for production
  • Rather than operating as a high-output breeding farm, we have created a safe, well-managed haven where beautiful and extraordinary birds can thrive
  • Our breeding stock is raised using natural husbandry practices focused on health, vigour and long-term genetic strength 🌿
  • No vaccinations are administered
  • No routine medications or antibiotic treatments are used
  • No added hormones are used 🚫
  • Our goal is to maintain healthy, stress-free breeding stock capable of producing strong, viable offspring
  • We believe that the way birds are treated is reflected in the quality of the eggs and chicks they produce ✅

📍 Collection & Delivery

  • Collection by arrangement ✅
  • Nationwide courier delivery available 🚚
  • Packaging and courier charges are calculated separately
  • Prompt handling is recommended to protect egg viability
  • Courier delivery is undertaken at the buyer’s risk because fertile eggs can be affected by vibration, temperature changes and handling during transport
