What began in 2021 with just 6 chickens and a passion for healthy, naturally raised poultry has steadily grown into one of the Garden Route’s dedicated small-scale breeding programmes 🐔
A year later, another 12 chickens joined the flock, and from those humble beginnings we continued to build through careful breeding, ethical husbandry, and a commitment to producing strong, healthy birds rather than focusing on high-volume production 🌿
Today, we proudly maintain approximately 80 free-range laying hens, supplying fresh eggs while continuing to strengthen our breeding programme through carefully selected genetics and ongoing flock improvement 🥚
In 2025, we expanded into the world of premium poultry, introducing carefully selected breeds including Polish Bantams, Silkies, Frizzles, Brahmas, Easter Eggers, Sablepoots, Pekins, Quail, and speciality colour breeding projects 🐣
Our premium programme has now grown to approximately 120 premium chickens, with new breeding groups being developed and additional breeds planned for the future ✅
When we started our premium breeds journey last year, I must admit that buying fertile eggs was not easy. Many breeders did not share photos of their parent stock, making it difficult to know exactly what you were buying and what genetics you were investing in 📷
Communication was often just as frustrating. Enquiries would go unanswered, updates were difficult to get, and customers were left constantly following up. We believe purchasing fertile eggs should be a simple, transparent and professional experience 🤝
Delivery was another challenge. Overnight courier services were often unavailable, forcing buyers to use slower options that could take 3 to 5 days. When you’re paying R50 to R80 per fertile egg and spending R2,000 or more on an order, it simply doesn’t make sense to risk fertility and hatchability to save a small amount on shipping 🚚
Packaging quality was equally disappointing. We experienced expensive fertile egg orders arriving with broken eggs that contaminated the remaining eggs in the shipment. Nobody should spend R1,800 on fertile eggs only to receive a box of broken shells and disappointment 📦
These experiences inspired us to build something better for poultry enthusiasts throughout South Africa 🇿🇦
Today we are working towards becoming a one-stop poultry shop where customers can conveniently purchase fertile eggs, premium poultry, chicks, incubators, brooder boxes, feed, pigeons and much more as our range continues to grow 🛒
We are proudly based in Barrington, approximately 15km outside Sedgefield, in the heart of the Garden Route 🌿
All live birds are collection only from our premises. Fertile hatching eggs can be shipped via our preferred Courier Guy Overnight service or through PUDO Locker Delivery, depending on customer requirements 🚛
As a relatively new premium breeder, we remain dependent on the breed lines originally sourced from reputable breeders while continuing to strengthen and develop our own breeding programme 🐔
Future breeding pairs and offspring will allow us to further verify egg colours, breed characteristics, fertility and line consistency as our programme continues to mature ✅
For this reason, we currently offer standard pricing on our hatching eggs while we continue validating and refining our premium breeding lines through practical breeding results and ongoing flock development 🥚
Every bird plays an important role in our journey. We focus on fertility, health, temperament, strong genetics, and responsible breeding practices to produce quality fertile eggs, chicks, and breeding stock for poultry enthusiasts throughout South Africa 🇿🇦
Most importantly, we remain committed to the same values that started this journey: ethical breeding, natural husbandry, healthy birds, honest breeder pricing, and a genuine passion for poultry ❤️
Once your fertile eggs arrive, it is important to handle them carefully to ensure the best possible hatch results.
After transport, eggs may be unsettled and need time to stabilise before incubation ✅
Place the eggs pointed end facing down in a cool room (not refrigerated) and allow them to rest for 12–24 hours before incubation.
This allows the internal air cell to stabilise after movement during transport and improves hatch success 🐣
Ensure your incubator is running and stable before placing eggs inside:
✔ Temperature: 37.5°C
✔ Humidity: 45–55% (Days 1–18)
✔ Increase humidity to 65–70% for the final 3 days
✔ Ensure proper ventilation and airflow ✅
Eggs should be turned 3–5 times per day (or automatically if using a turner) to prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell.
Always turn gently and consistently ✅
On Day 18, stop turning the eggs and increase humidity.
This is known as “lockdown” and prepares the chicks for hatching. Do not open the incubator unnecessarily during this stage ❗
Chicks typically hatch around Day 21.
Once hatching starts, allow chicks to fully emerge and dry inside the incubator before removing them ✅
✔ Always incubate eggs within 7 days of laying for best results
✔ Hatch rates vary depending on handling, transport, and incubation conditions
✔ Couriered eggs may have reduced hatch success compared to collected eggs 🚫
✔ Avoid excessive handling or temperature fluctuations
✔ Cleanliness and stable conditions are key to success ✅
Follow these steps carefully to give your chicks the best possible start 🐣✅
Chickens and quail are extremely rewarding to keep, but it is important to understand that they are not pets in the same way as dogs or cats ❗ They are farm animals with natural instincts, and their behaviour is very different from household pets.
At Garden Route Trail Hatch House, we do not support or allow the mistreatment of birds. Our animals are not raised to be constantly handled, picked up, or passed around—especially by children. This type of handling causes stress and is not in the best interest of the bird’s health and wellbeing 🚫
Most chickens prefer to be observed rather than handled. While some may become friendly over time and tolerate gentle interaction, many do not enjoy being picked up and may move away or become stressed when forced into contact.
Quail are even more sensitive and instinct-driven. As prey birds, their natural response is to avoid handling. Most quail do not enjoy being touched or held and are best kept with minimal physical interaction. They thrive in calm, secure environments where they are left undisturbed.
✔ Chickens and quail are livestock with personality, not cuddle pets
✔ They are best enjoyed by observing natural behaviour 🐔
✔ Some birds may become tame, but many prefer space
✔ Excessive handling causes stress and should be avoided ❗
Please be aware that local municipal bylaws in South Africa regulate the keeping of poultry in residential areas. These rules may vary depending on your municipality, and it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure compliance ✅
In most residential (urban and suburban) areas:
✔ A limited number of hens are usually permitted
✔ Roosters are often NOT allowed due to noise nuisance concerns 🚫
✔ Excessive noise, including early morning crowing, can be legally classified as a nuisance under local bylaws
Fertile eggs are not sexed, which means chicks may hatch as either hens or roosters. If you are in a residential area, you must be prepared to rehome or manage roosters where they are not permitted ❗
Before purchasing fertile eggs or birds, please confirm your local municipal regulations regarding poultry, space requirements, and noise control.
Respect the nature of the bird, understand your legal responsibilities, and you will have a successful and enjoyable poultry experience ✅
Choose your fertile eggs or birds and place your order with us. Fertile eggs should be incubated within 7 to 10 days for best results.
For 2-week old chicks, all orders are incubated fresh per order with an estimated lead time of +-6 weeks before collection ✅
✔ Ethically raised poultry – no small cage or intensive breeding systems 🚫
✔ Strong genetics and carefully selected breeding lines 🧬
✔ Focused on high fertility and healthy birds 🐔
✔ Raised in a safe, controlled Garden Route environment 🌿
Collection is available by arrangement. Delivery options are available depending on location.
Due to the perishable nature of eggs, prompt handling after delivery is essential ✅
All fertile eggs are packed as securely as possible and clearly marked as fragile during shipping 📦.
However, once eggs leave our care, we cannot be held responsible for any breakages, damage, or mishandling by couriers 🚫
Please note that shipped (courier) eggs typically have lower fertility and hatch rates due to transport conditions.
Expected hatch rates may range between approximately 40%–60%, depending on handling and incubation practices.
Live birds, including chickens, quail, and pigeons, must be collected at your own risk.
Customers are required to bring suitable transport crates on collection to ensure the safety and welfare of the birds 🐔✅
Do fertile eggs guarantee a hatch?
No, hatch success depends on incubation conditions, handling, and storage.
How long can eggs be stored?
For best results, incubate within 7 to 10 days of laying.
Are chicks available immediately?
No, chicks are incubated per order with a lead time of approximately 6 weeks
Can eggs be couriered?
Yes, but please note reduced hatch rates and transport risks as stated above.
Start your flock with confidence 🐣 we’re here to support you every step of the way ✅
