⭐ Growing Since 2021 ⭐

What began in 2021 with just 6 chickens and a passion for healthy, naturally raised poultry has steadily grown into one of the Garden Route’s dedicated small-scale breeding programmes πŸ”

A year later, another 12 chickens joined the flock, and from those humble beginnings we continued to build through careful breeding, ethical husbandry, and a commitment to producing strong, healthy birds rather than focusing on high-volume production 🌿

Today, we proudly maintain approximately 80 free-range laying hens, supplying fresh eggs while continuing to strengthen our breeding programme through carefully selected genetics and ongoing flock improvement πŸ₯š

In 2025, we expanded into the world of premium poultry, introducing carefully selected breeds including Polish Bantams, Silkies, Frizzles, Brahmas, Easter Eggers, Sablepoots, Pekins, Quail, and speciality colour breeding projects 🐣

Our premium programme has now grown to approximately 120 premium chickens, with new breeding groups being developed and additional breeds planned for the future βœ…

Every bird plays an important role in our journey. We focus on fertility, health, temperament, strong genetics, and responsible breeding practices to produce quality fertile eggs, chicks, and breeding stock for poultry enthusiasts throughout South Africa πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

Most importantly, we remain committed to the same values that started this journey: ethical breeding, natural husbandry, healthy birds, honest breeder pricing, and a genuine passion for poultry ❀️

What To Do When You Receive Your Fertile Eggs πŸ₯šπŸ£

Once your fertile eggs arrive, it is important to handle them carefully to ensure the best possible hatch results.
After transport, eggs may be unsettled and need time to stabilise before incubation βœ…

πŸ“¦ Step 1: Resting Period (Very Important)

Place the eggs pointed end facing down in a cool room (not refrigerated) and allow them to rest for 12–24 hours before incubation.
This allows the internal air cell to stabilise after movement during transport and improves hatch success 🐣

πŸ”₯ Step 2: Prepare Your Incubator

Ensure your incubator is running and stable before placing eggs inside:

βœ” Temperature: 37.5Β°C
βœ” Humidity: 45–55% (Days 1–18)
βœ” Increase humidity to 65–70% for the final 3 days
βœ” Ensure proper ventilation and airflow βœ…

πŸ”„ Step 3: Turning the Eggs

Eggs should be turned 3–5 times per day (or automatically if using a turner) to prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell.
Always turn gently and consistently βœ…

⏳ Step 4: Lockdown Period

On Day 18, stop turning the eggs and increase humidity.
This is known as β€œlockdown” and prepares the chicks for hatching. Do not open the incubator unnecessarily during this stage ❗

🐣 Step 5: Hatching

Chicks typically hatch around Day 21.
Once hatching starts, allow chicks to fully emerge and dry inside the incubator before removing them βœ…

⚠️ Important Notes

βœ” Always incubate eggs within 7 days of laying for best results
βœ” Hatch rates vary depending on handling, transport, and incubation conditions
βœ” Couriered eggs may have reduced hatch success compared to collected eggs 🚫
βœ” Avoid excessive handling or temperature fluctuations
βœ” Cleanliness and stable conditions are key to success βœ…

Follow these steps carefully to give your chicks the best possible start πŸ£βœ…

Understanding Chicken & Quail Behaviour πŸ”πŸ£

Chickens and quail are extremely rewarding to keep, but it is important to understand that they are not pets in the same way as dogs or cats ❗ They are farm animals with natural instincts, and their behaviour is very different from household pets.

At Garden Route Trail Hatch House, we do not support or allow the mistreatment of birds. Our animals are not raised to be constantly handled, picked up, or passed aroundβ€”especially by children. This type of handling causes stress and is not in the best interest of the bird’s health and wellbeing 🚫

Most chickens prefer to be observed rather than handled. While some may become friendly over time and tolerate gentle interaction, many do not enjoy being picked up and may move away or become stressed when forced into contact.

🐣 Quail Behaviour

Quail are even more sensitive and instinct-driven. As prey birds, their natural response is to avoid handling. Most quail do not enjoy being touched or held and are best kept with minimal physical interaction. They thrive in calm, secure environments where they are left undisturbed.

βœ… The Right Expectation

βœ” Chickens and quail are livestock with personality, not cuddle pets
βœ” They are best enjoyed by observing natural behaviour πŸ”
βœ” Some birds may become tame, but many prefer space
βœ” Excessive handling causes stress and should be avoided ❗

βš–οΈ Important Legal & Bylaw Notice (South Africa)

Please be aware that local municipal bylaws in South Africa regulate the keeping of poultry in residential areas. These rules may vary depending on your municipality, and it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure compliance βœ…

In most residential (urban and suburban) areas:

βœ” A limited number of hens are usually permitted
βœ” Roosters are often NOT allowed due to noise nuisance concerns 🚫
βœ” Excessive noise, including early morning crowing, can be legally classified as a nuisance under local bylaws

Fertile eggs are not sexed, which means chicks may hatch as either hens or roosters. If you are in a residential area, you must be prepared to rehome or manage roosters where they are not permitted ❗

Before purchasing fertile eggs or birds, please confirm your local municipal regulations regarding poultry, space requirements, and noise control.

Respect the nature of the bird, understand your legal responsibilities, and you will have a successful and enjoyable poultry experience βœ…

How It Works 🐣

Choose your fertile eggs or birds and place your order with us. Fertile eggs should be incubated within 7 to 10 days for best results.
For 2-week old chicks, all orders are incubated fresh per order with an estimated lead time of +-6 weeks before collectionΒ  βœ…

Why Choose Us βœ…

βœ” Ethically raised poultry – no small cage or intensive breeding systems 🚫
βœ” Strong genetics and carefully selected breeding lines 🧬
βœ” Focused on high fertility and healthy birds πŸ”
βœ” Raised in a safe, controlled Garden Route environment 🌿

Collection & Delivery 🚚

Collection is available by arrangement. Delivery options are available depending on location.
Due to the perishable nature of eggs, prompt handling after delivery is essential βœ…

Important Shipping & Responsibility Notice ⚠️

All fertile eggs are packed as securely as possible and clearly marked as fragile during shipping πŸ“¦.
However, once eggs leave our care, we cannot be held responsible for any breakages, damage, or mishandling by couriers 🚫

Please note that shipped (courier) eggs typically have lower fertility and hatch rates due to transport conditions.
Expected hatch rates may range between approximately 40%–60%, depending on handling and incubation practices.

Live birds, including chickens, quail, and pigeons, must be collected at your own risk.
Customers are required to bring suitable transport crates on collection to ensure the safety and welfare of the birds πŸ”βœ…
